Description
Advocate's Close is one of Edinburgh's oldest closes, believed to date from 1544. The steep and narrow lane leads upwards from Cockburn Street to the Royal Mile just opposite St.Giles Cathedral.
The close is named after Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees, the last Advocate of Scotland in office during the time of the Restoration, Revolution and Union.
Other early residents were John Scougall (painter to William III and Queen Mary) and Bishop Bothwell (Abbot of Holyrood House 1570).
