Description
Another gem of architectural detail found in Glasgow city centre, Scotland.
One of a pair of Atlantes taking the place of columns on a department store doorway.
The colossal building was designed by architect Horatio Kelson Bromhead (1838-1934) and regarded as his most important work. The building was originally the Stewart and MacDonald Warehouse in Argyle Street and latterly known as Frasers.
The Greek mythological figures of Atlas (bearded and bowed) were sculpted from Granite by W.Vickers between 1899 - 1903. Masons were P & W Anderson ltd.
