Description
Barns Ness Lighthouse is an imposing 37m (121-foot) white tower located on a headland 5 km from Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. Overlooking the North Sea it marks the southern entrance to the Firth of Forth and Edinburgh.
The lighthouse was constructed by engineer David A Stevenson (cousin to the writer Robert Louis Stevenson) between 1899 and 1901. Taking approximately 2.5 years to construct, it was illuminated in October 1901. During the second world war it was machine gunned but no damage was sustained due to the tough stone it was built with from nearby Craigree and Barnton quarries, Edinburgh.
It has a round stone tower with 169 steps to the top, lantern, gallery and a 1-storey service building attached. The Tower is painted white and the lantern dome is black. It was deactivated in October 2005.
