Description
James Stuart Blackie (1809 -1895) was a University of Edinburgh Professor in Greek and German. He left 250, 19th century Greek books to the University Library which are still being used by students today. He was born in Aberdeen and studied in Germany and Italy. He was the inspiration behind the founding of the Celtic chair of the University of Edinburgh.
At the east of Lady Stair's Close, Patrick Geddes (Town Planner), following his programme of improvement of the Old Town, had two tiny closes removed to form a larger Court in order to bring light and air into the old tenements. This was Wardrop's Court. On the north side of the Court Blackie House was remodelled by Geddes as a university hall in memory of Professor J. S. Blackie. The North Bank side front was given new asymmetric two story oriel windows. At the centre of one there is a terracotta portrait of Blackie flanked by a thistle and a harp.
