Description
The Ca' D'Oro Building, at the corner of Union Street and Gordon Street in Glasgow by architect John Honeyman. The design was based on the 15th century Ca' D'Oro building known as the "Golden House" in Venice. It was originally a furniture warehouse and was opened in 1872.
Honeyman used triple-arched cast iron frames, which were cast at the Saracen Iron Foundry in Glasgow. The building’s best feature is its large bay windows, in the Venetian style of an open ended figure-of-eight. The roof features a glazed atrium, allowing light to flow into the centre of the building.
The building became known as the Ca' D'Oro in 1927, when a restaurant of that name was opened in the concrete mansard erected on top of the building. The interior of the building and the mansard were destroyed by a major fire in 1987, although the cast iron frame survived. The building was restored and refurbished. It reopened in 1990.
