Description
Malva moschata, the musk mallow, is a species of flowering plant in the family Malvaceae.
Alba (White Musk Mallow) is an upright, woody-based perennial boasting musk-scented flowers.
Musk mallow is cultivated for its seeds, which are used in perfumes as a replacement for musk. It is a source of an essential oil that is used in traditional medicine and to flavour foods. The plant also yields a fibre for clarifying sugar. The young leaves and fruits are eaten as vegetables.
Musk mallow was once an ingredient in soothing cough syrups and ointments.
It was also valued as an aphrodisiac.
In the Victorian "Language of Flowers" it is said to be a symbol of 'consumed by love', persuasion, and weakness.
