Description
The plant was built in 1963 on the only site in Scotland with sufficient raw materials for cement making. The area known as Oxwell Mains was long known as having the best Limestone in the lowlands.
The present company is committed to sustainability and the environment. Fossil fuels continue to be replaced by waste-derived fuels which reduce greenhouse gases.
The separate stack, through which the kiln gasses leave the system, is that of the sulphur dioxide scrubber. Because wet scrubbing is used, the plume carries a large amount of water vapour.
The Northwest quarry, now known as Whitesands quarry, has been transformed into a wildlife haven by agreement with RSPB Scotland. It is being left to develop naturally and is popular with birdwatchers.
