Description
Greyfriars Kirk is located in the heart of Edinburgh's old town.
It was the first church to be built in Edinburgh after the Reformation of 1560, and was built on land granted by Mary Queen of Scots, previously the property of the Franciscan monastery in the Grassmarket (hence the name Greyfriars). Building started in 1602, using stone reclaimed from a disused Dominican convent elsewhere in the city, and the kirk opened for business on Christmas Day, 1620.
