The early 18th century icehouse is a circular domed subterranean structure constructed of sandstone rubble masonry, with a north facing façade that contains the Icehouse entrance.
It is one of the few surviving garden structures associated with the original Riccarton House.
As the name suggests, the building stored ice taken from the loch in Winter, which was then used to help preserve food for use in the house well into the Summer months.
