Description
The common foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, is a common wild plant growing in woods and hedgerows. It has large, purple-pink spikes of trumpet flowers in summer. It also makes an excellent garden plant, especially for shady positions.
The flowers are very nectar-rich and are extremely attractive to bees and butterflies.
Foxgloves contain the chemical digitalin, which is used in medicine to treat heart conditions, and all parts of the plant are toxic if eaten.
