Description
Shearwater moored at Granton Harbour, Edinburgh, Scotland.
The steel constructed dredger was built in 1968 by Hall Russell & Co. Ltd, the last of the Aberdeen shipbuilders (closing in 1992).
Shearwater was a thin screw grab suction dredger. A Priestman crane with a buckey grab was situated on the bow which deposited the silt from the harbour into an open holdwell on the starboard side. A trailing suction pipe was stowed on deck and when required for sandy shingle ii was lowered over the side. The forward end of the pipe was sleeved through a steel plate which slid into 2 guide rails that go down the ship side to a valve hole at the bilge bottom. Once the pipe was in place the valve was opened, the pumps were switched on and the gravel was sucked into the holdwell. When the holdwell was full the ship would proceed out to sea to dump its load by opening six hinged doors under the keel.
The original grab crank has been removed and a hydraulic J.C.B. crane is in its place. The trailing suction gear has also been removed as it was never used.
