Description
Sycamore tree on the Riccarton Estate in Edinburgh, Scotland. This particular specimen, from the original collection, is over 250 years old.
Native to Europe but naturalised in Britain, the Sycamore is a familiar sight in both town and countryside. With great age, it takes on a dignified, impressive appearance.
A. pseudoplatanus is a large, fast-growing, resilient, deciduous tree with dark green, five-lobed leaves 10-20cm long.
Yellow-green, catkin-like flowers appear in spring and are followed by bunches of green, winged fruit.
The flowers provide early pollen for bumblebees, and a number of moths and other insects depend on the tree. Sycamore provides shelter, nesting and roosting sites where few other trees can survive.
