Description
The Victoria Swing Bridge, Leith Docks, Edinburgh, Scotland.
The bridge was built between 1871 and 1874 to service the new docks. The bridge is constructed from wrought iron, and weighs 620 tonnes. The bridge carried two tracks of a dock railway and a private road across the mouth of the Water of Leith on the south side of the Dock system. There are footpaths on either side outside the truss structure. The tracks and roadway have now been removed, and the bridge has a wooden deck. The swing bridge was once driven by the adjacent hydraulic power station. It swung to the north, and the space afforded for the counterbalance can still be seen. After restoration, it was reopened on 22 November 2000, although not operational.
