Description
Erica cinerea (Bell Heather, also known as Winter Heath) is native to western Europe.
It mostly occurs on moors and heathland with relatively dry, acidic, nutrient poor soils. It can also be found in coastal dune heath and occasionally in woodland.
It is grown as an ornamental plant and cultivated in a wide range of colours. It is drought-tolerant and grows well in full sun with well-drained soil.
The bell-shaped flowers appear between July and September attracting all kinds of nectar-loving insects.
The honey that results from bees that feed on heather is dark, fragrant and very popular.
