Holyrood Abbey was founded by David I in 1128. The cloister precinct was later turned into a modern Renaissance palace, Holyrood house and became the Royal family’s main home in Scotland.
St Anthony's Chapel ruins (circa 1300's or beyond) stand high up on a rocky outcrop and little is known about its origins. It seems very likely that St Anthony's Chapel was closely associated with Holyrood Abbey, which stood just a few hundred yards away. It has also been suggested that the chapel served as a sort of religious beacon, designed to be clearly visible to sea-borne pilgrims coming to Holyrood Abbey as they sailed up the River Forth.
Arthur’s Seat, the park’s highest point, is the remains of a volcano. Stone and flint tools found here reveal human activity as far back as 5000 BC.
