Description
The mute swan is the largest and heaviest water bird in the British Isles. Although designated as Mute they do make hissing and honking sounds but do not make any noise in flight. The only sound is the beating of the wings.
The male is known as the cob and the female as the pen. They appear identical but the male is larger, with a slightly longer head and body and wider wing span. The male has a larger caruncle (knob or berry) at the base of the bill. They can live for twenty years or more in their natural habitat.
