Union Canal, Bridge 11, Hermiston, Edinburgh, Scotland.
The plaque on the bridge reads - Near this spot John Scott Russell discovered the Solitary Wave in August 1834.
A single wave on this canal has informed the science behind our communication systems today.
In 1834 John Scott Russell, a Scottish Naval Engineer, was experimenting with the design of canal boats. When a boat stopped suddenly he witnessed a single wave continue down the canal without changing shape or speed. He followed the wave on horse back for about a mile and later described it as a 'solitary wave of translation' (a soliton).
Scientists rediscovered his theory in the 1960s and have applied it to fibre optic technology.
Welcome! I am an Artist/Photographer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. My interests are wide and varied and this is reflected in my subject matter. I enjoy finding the beauty in even the most mundane subjects and the challenge of depicting the small details which are sometimes overlooked. Where possible, I research my subjects to give me a better understanding, which in turn allows me to adapt my approach to each one. I do not restrict myself to any particular style or media as this gives me the freedom to create my vision on each individual piece. I hope you enjoy browsing my galleries as much as I have enjoyed creating the works. Copyright © Yvonne Johnstone 2024. All rights reserved. All artwork in this gallery is original and uniquely...
