Description
Hoverfly (Helophilus pendulus).
This is a distinctive and attractive hoverfly marked with three black stripes on the thorax and brown, yellow and pale markings on its abdomen. It is also known as the ‘Sun-fly’ as it is an unashamed sun worshipper, or 'the Footballer' because of its striped shirt...thorax.
The hoverfly's compound eyes are made up of thousands of ommatidia, which together make up one complete picture. Compound eyes are excellent at detecting motion.
Whilst this insect looks ferocious, like all hoverflies, it is completely harmless (unless you’re an aphid) and cannot bite or sting.
